Methodical considerations when estimating nutrient digestibility in horses using the mobile bag technique

چکیده
Abstract Total collection of faeces is considered the golden standard for estimating apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) in horses. However, evaluation individual feedstuffs limited and determination nutrient different segments gastrointestinal (GIT) excluded. The rationale performing this study was that mobile bag technique (MBT) can provide information on feedstuffs' degradation, use fistulated animals does additionally regarding degradation GIT. Recommendations using MBT ruminants are well established, but methodical studies have been published with objective to evaluate by comparing ATTD disappearance kinetics hay It hypothesised DM as estimated equal DM. Furthermore, we size has no effect increasing feed surface area (FSA) decreases disappearance. Five caecum cannulated horses were fed a hay-only diet (6.7 kg DM/day) 14 days adaptation followed four consecutive days collection. Three sizes (height × length side, cm; 1.2 × 10 × 2, 3 × 4 × 2, 1 × 6 × 2) three FSAs (10.4, 20.8 41.7 mg/cm2) administrated at each meal (3 meals/day) 1 2 Faeces checked bags every 6th h, time noted together transit (TT) type estimated. Dry matter from fitted profiles, effective degradability (ED) (Dt) determined. results showed DM, organic (OM), NDF ADF be predicted based their bags, ash CP overestimated comparison ATTD. TT 29.2 h, when mean retention 30 h predict ED Dt, it clear underestimated, whereas Dt reflected In conclusion, used estimate OM fibre these nutrients resemble did not affect disappearance, FSA should kept below 20 mg/cm2 higher levels might limit kinetics.

Nutrient Digestibility in Horses
Many equine nutrient requirements are based on certain assumptions about how well horses digest and absorb nutrients. Unfortunately, a great many questions remain unanswered about nutrient digestibility in horses. How well do horses utilize different sources of nutrients? What nutrients interact with one another to affect digestibility? Over the past five years, Kentucky Equine Research has con...
متن کاملRuminally undegradable protein content and digestibility for forages using the mobile bag in situ technique.
Four experiments were conducted to evaluate RUP content and digestibility for smooth bromegrass, subirrigated meadow, upland native range, and warm-season grasses. Samples were collected from esophageally cannulated cows or ruminally cannulated steers. Forages were ruminally incubated in in situ bags for durations of time based on 75% of total mean retention time, which was based on IVDMD and r...
متن کاملDetermination of undegradable intake protein digestibility of forages using the mobile nylon bag technique.
Two experiments were conducted using 2 ruminally and duodenally fistulated steers to determine the digestibility of undegradable intake protein (UIP) of smooth bromegrass (Bromis inermis), birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus coniculatus L.), and heat-treated alfalfa (Medicago sativa) using the mobile nylon bag technique. Undegradable intake protein was determined using neutral detergent insoluble CP at a ...
متن کاملEffect of diet composition and feeding pattern on the prececal digestibility of starches from diverse botanical origins measured with the mobile nylon bag technique in horses.
This trial was conducted to determine the extent of prececal starch digestibility depending on the botanical origin of starch and on diet characteristics (i.e., composition and feeding pattern). The prececal disappearance of six substrates (oats, barley, corn, horse bean, potato, and wheat) was measured in four cannulated horses fed (as-fed basis) 11.8 g/kg BW of a high-fiber (HF) or high-starc...

Five Yorkshire x Lacombe barrows (45 kg initial wt) fitted with duodenal cannulas approximately 10 cm from the pyloric sphincter were used to determine the influence of the pH of the predigestion solution (pH 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 or 2.5), pepsin activity (189 vs 377 IU/liter) and duration of predigestion (0, 1.5, 2.5 or 4.0 h) on the apparent digestibility of the protein in soybean meal (SBM), meal an...
